Troubleshooting guide

The computer reboots unexpectedly

Rebooting once after updating Windows may be normal, but rebooting repeatedly while working, playing, or even before the system starts up indicates a problem. Record the circumstances and error code to help distinguish a Windows crash from an overheating, power, or memory failure.

The most common symptoms

  • The computer reboots only under heavy load.
  • A blue error screen appears and the system reboots.
  • Reloads occur at rest.
  • The computer gets stuck in a continuous boot cycle.
  • A blackout resembles a sudden loss of electricity.
  • The problem started after an update, new app or connected device.

Possible reasons

Reboots can be caused by a Windows or driver error, a failed update, overheating, an unstable charger, or a desktop power supply. Problems with RAM, SSD/HDD, graphics card, motherboard or BIOS are also possible. One symptom does not confirm a specific failure.

What can be safely checked?

  1. Write down the exact time and step at which the computer rebooted.
  2. Take a picture of the blue screen error code.
  3. If the system is stable for long enough, save important files.
  4. Disconnect recently connected non-essential USB devices and the dock.
  5. Check external power cords, socket and charger for overheating.
  6. Complete pending Windows updates only when the computer is running stably and has reliable power.
  7. Notice if the fans are loud or the case gets hot before rebooting.

Important - what not to do: Do not repeat games, tests or other heavy loads if the computer shuts down due to heat. Do not open the power supply unit, change BIOS voltages, or remove components while the device is on. Do not overwrite Windows before verifying that there is no hardware failure and that the data is saved.

When to contact the master?

It should be diagnosed if the reboots are repeated, occur before Windows starts, depend on the load, or the computer suddenly loses power. Contact us more quickly after a spill, a fall, a musty smell or unusual heating.

Frequently asked questions

Can a computer be overloaded by a virus?

It's possible, but reboots are also often caused by drivers, Windows, temperature, power or hardware. An antivirus scan alone does not rule out all causes.

Is it important to take a picture of the blue screen code?

Yes. The stop code and reboot circumstances help guide the selection of appropriate tests, although the code itself does not always accurately identify the failed component.

Can I continue to use a rebooting computer?

Save your data first. If reboots become more frequent, occur under light load, heat or smell is felt, do not torture the computer with repeated attempts.
