Troubleshooting guide

Computer gets hot - when does it become a problem?

It's normal for a computer to run warm, but constantly maxing out fans, reduced performance, or shutting down on its own indicates a possible cooling problem. First, make sure there is free air flow and check the application load. If symptoms persist, fans, dust, and heat transfer system should be evaluated.

The most common symptoms

  • The fans are constantly whirring even without complex tasks.
  • The computer slows down when playing games or working with demanding programs.
  • The case becomes unusually hot in one place.
  • The device unexpectedly shuts down or reboots.
  • The fan is stuttering, stalling or not spinning at all.
  • Performance is degraded even though the same programs are used.

Possible reasons

Airflow can be restricted by soft surfaces, blocked openings, or accumulated dust. Other reasons are a non-functioning fan, weak fastening, improperly applied or worn thermal paste, damaged heat pipe. The temperature can also be raised by a high load on the processor or graphics card, a background program, improper power settings, or a hot environment.

What can be safely checked?

  1. Use the computer on a hard and flat surface. Do not place it on a bed, sofa or soft carpet.
  2. Turn off the device and use a soft dry brush to remove only visible dust from the outer grill.
  3. After starting Windows, open the Task Manager and see if there is any unnecessary program loading the CPU.
  4. Reboot your computer and compare its performance for the same task.
  5. If you're using a reliable manufacturer's diagnostic tool, compare the temperatures to the model-specific specifications. There is no universal "bad temperature" for all processors.
  6. If the computer shuts down, save important files and do not repeat heavy load tests.

Important - what not to do: Do not spray cleaners into vents, vacuum components with a household vacuum, or attempt to blow through a closed computer so that the fan spins uncontrollably. Do not disassemble the laptop or replace the thermal paste if this requires disconnecting the internal battery or removing the cooling system.

When to contact the master?

Inspection is required if the computer shuts down due to temperature, constantly reduces performance, the fan is strawberry, or problems persist after ensuring good airflow. Diagnostics help distinguish a simple cleaning need from a fan, cooling system or electronics failure.

Frequently asked questions

What computer temperature is too high?

The limits depend on the specific processor, graphics card and manufacturer's cooling logic. Not only the numbers are important, but also the changed sound of fans, drop in performance and shutdowns.

How often should you clean your computer?

There is no universal term. The need depends on the structure, intensity of use, pets, dust and environment. It is better to rely on the examination and symptoms, rather than the calendar alone.

Does changing the thermal paste always eliminate the heating?

No. Overheating can be caused by dust, fan, heat pipe, improper clamping or heavy software load.
