What does thermal paste do?
The surfaces of the processor and the cooler are not perfectly smooth. A thin layer of thermal paste fills microscopic gaps and helps heat reach the cooler. A thicker layer doesn't necessarily work better, and paste alone is no substitute for a clean radiator, a working fan, and proper compression.
Signs that heat transfer is worth checking
- Temperatures increased during the same task and in a similar environment.
- The fans have become louder, although the application load has not changed.
- The processor slows down or the computer shuts down.
- The cooling system was removed during another repair.
- The problem persisted after cleaning the vents and checking the fan.
Possible reasons
Thermal material can eventually harden, dry out, or move away from the active zone due to temperature cycles. Poor heat transfer is also caused by uneven application, improper cooler compression, damaged thermal gaskets or heat pipe. As a result, replacing the thermal paste should not be done without checking the entire cooling system.
What to check safely
- Make sure the vents are not covered.
- In the task manager, check if the background program is not using the CPU.
- If you have a reliable tool from the manufacturer, compare the temperature with previous measurements and the model specification.
- Pay attention to the sound of the fan and whether hot air is removed from the case at all.
- Record what applications and environmental conditions are causing the problem.
When is diagnostics necessary?
Diagnostics is required if the computer shuts down, slows down due to temperature, or the fan works abnormally. Checking the system can determine if cleaning and thermal paste will be enough, or if there is a fan, mounting or heat pipe failure.
Important - what not to do: Do not use toothpaste, glue or other substitutes. More thermal paste is not better. Do not use electrically conductive liquid metal without special expertise - it can damage components and react with some metals. Do not disassemble the cooling system of the laptop without disconnecting the internal battery according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Frequently asked questions
Does thermal paste need to be changed every year?
No. Quality factory material can work for many years. It is better to base the decision on the change in temperatures, the condition of the cooling and whether the cooler has been removed.
Will applying more thermal paste lower the temperature?
Not necessarily. A layer that is too thick or uneven can impair heat transfer or transfer onto surrounding components.
Is changing the thermal paste and cleaning the computer the same thing?
No. Cleaning removes dust and checks airflow, while changing the paste restores contact between the chip and the cooler. Often these jobs are done together, but their purpose is different.
