Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
Check the IP and Default Gateway of the active adapter and compare with another working device. If you need to run DHCP on your home network, use automatic IP and DNS acquisition. A static address may be necessary on a work network, so do not change it without checking with your administrator. Try a different cable and LAN port on the router.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Automatic address in home network
If DHCP is provided on the network, set to obtain IP/DNS automatically.
Steps to follow
- Only make this change on your home network where automatic DHCP should be enabled. Do not change the working static IP.
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet and open the active Ethernet or Wi-Fi properties.
- For IP assignment, click Edit and select Automatic (DHCP); Also leave DNS on automatic if your network allows it.
- Save and log in again. ipconfig check if you got the address and Default Gateway; 169.254 indicates a receiving problem.
Static IP check
If the address is assigned by the administrator, check it against the administrator's data and do not change it randomly.
Steps to follow
- Use the ipconfig command to write down the address, mask and Default Gateway of the active adapter. Do not make the entire report public.
- Compare with the static address setup provided to you by your administrator.
- If you do not match or do not know the correct values, contact the administrator; do not copy the address of another computer, as this may cause a conflict.
Comparison of physical connection
Try a different cable and LAN port if the address is still not received.
Steps to follow
- Check that the Ethernet cable plugs are fully inserted into the computer and the router's LAN, not the wrong WAN.
- Try another known-good cable, then another LAN port.
- Repeat the connection test; if one outlet works, write down which one doesn't and don't break the damaged connector.
If the problem persists
Verify that DHCP is indeed enabled for your network. If the static IP was set by the administrator, save the data and contact him; a random address may conflict with another device.
