Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
Check the socket indicators, other cable/router LAN connection, adapter status and ipconfig. If the IP starts with 169.254, DHCP may not be working.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Cable and LAN socket
Compare with another cable and router socket.
Steps to follow
- Check that the Ethernet cable plugs are fully inserted into the computer and the router's LAN, not the wrong WAN.
- Try another known-good cable, then another LAN port.
- Repeat the connection test; if one outlet works, write down which one doesn't and don't break the damaged connector.
Obtaining an IP
Check the IP and DHCP of the active adapter; For address 169.254, you need to determine why the address was not received.
Steps to follow
- Only make this change on your home network where automatic DHCP should be enabled. Do not change the working static IP.
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet and open the active Ethernet or Wi-Fi properties.
- For IP assignment, click Edit and select Automatic (DHCP); Also leave DNS on automatic if your network allows it.
- Save and log in again. ipconfig check if you got the address and Default Gateway; 169.254 indicates a receiving problem.
Adapter or vendor diagnostics
If the same cable works elsewhere, check the computer; if not working on any device, check WAN and provider.
Steps to follow
- Compare the same cable or Wi-Fi with another device.
- If it works elsewhere, check the network adapter error and model driver in your PC's Device Manager.
- If it doesn't work on all devices, check the WAN indicator according to the router manual and call the supplier with the time of the failure.
- Do not perform a factory reset without setup data.
If the problem persists
Compare with another LAN jack and cable. IP 169.254 indicates that a normal address could not be obtained; check DHCP but don't change company static IP without admin.
