Gigabit Ethernet only connects at 100 Mbps

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

100 Mbps instead of 1 Gbps often refers to the limit of the cable or connection. A gigabit connection requires proper both ends and all the required pairs of cable. Internet plan speed and physical Ethernet connection speed are different things.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Connection speed test

First, check the physical connection reading.

    Steps to follow

    1. In Windows Settings > Network & Internet > Ethernet, open the connection properties and find "Link speed".
    2. Note whether it shows 100/100 Mbps or 1000/1000 Mbps. This is not an internet speed test result.
    3. Check the specifications of the computer adapter and router slot to make sure both support 1 Gbps.
    4. If one only supports 100Mbps, a suitable device or another socket is required.
  2. Separation of cable and wall outlet

    Compare short direct connection.

    Steps to follow

    1. Try another known good Cat 5e or higher cable of the correct category directly into the gigabit port on the router.
    2. Temporarily bypass the wall outlet, extension cord and adapter.
    3. If the speed has become 1 Gbps, return the intermediate parts one by one and find the limiting circuit.
    4. If nothing has changed, check that Speed & Duplex has not been manually limited to 100 Mbps in the adapter's advanced options; normally choose automatic tuning.

If the problem persists

If 100 Mbps remains with another cable and gigabit socket, check the capabilities of the adapter and socket contacts. Leave automatic tuning unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise; forcing 1 Gbps will not remove a broken cable pair.
