USB Ethernet adapter heats up and disconnects while copying

Topic #372 · Updated · Pataisoma.lt

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

The warmth of the USB Ethernet adapter may be normal, but repeated disconnections during copying are not desirable behavior. Check the USB connection, the adapter power, the driver and whether the problem is repeated regardless of the network cable.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Direct USB connection

Remove the influence of the dock and hub.

    Steps to follow

    1. Unplug the adapter from the dock and plug it directly into the appropriate USB port on your computer.
    2. If the adapter has a replaceable USB cable, try another cable that matches its speed.
    3. Replace the Ethernet cable and router socket, then repeat the same copying process.
    4. Make a note of whether the USB device itself is down or just the Ethernet connection; these are different diagnostic directions.
  2. Comparison between the driver and another computer

Check if the problem follows the adapter.

    Steps to follow

    1. Install the driver for your system from the adapter manufacturer, if one is provided.
    2. Place the adapter in a ventilated area, do not cover it or place it on a heating device.
    3. If there are no signs of damage, compare with another computer and the same suitable cable.
    4. If the failure follows the adapter, replace it. If only one computer, check its USB controller and power settings according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

If the problem persists

If the adapter freezes on different computers and gets very hot, stop using it and ask for a replacement. If only on one dock, check the dock's power and USB connection. The smell of burning or melting plastic means that the tests must be stopped.
