A 2.5 Gb/s network is slower than a 1 Gb/s network

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

The 2.5 Gb/s adapter note does not guarantee this file copying speed. The switch, another computer's network, disk, USB connection or processor can be limiting. First, measure your local connection separately from the Internet.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Full circuit speed check

Check each end of the connection.

    Steps to follow

    1. Check the actual connection speed on both computers or NAS, not just the adapter model.
    2. In the switch specification, make sure that the specific slots you are using support 2.5 Gb/s.
    3. If the adapter is USB, check that it is not connected via a USB 2 hub or socket.
    4. Compare another suitable cable and watch for error or break indicators on the managed switch if you have access.
  2. Separation of network and disk boundaries

    Use a well-defined local test.

    Steps to follow

    1. Copy one large file between two fast enough local drives and watch the load on both drives.
    2. Remember the units: 2.5 gigabit is not 2.5 gigabytes per second, and protocol overhead reduces useful speeds.
    3. If you can, with a reliable local network test such as iperf3, compare the connection without burning to disk; do not expose the server to the Internet.
    4. If the network is fast, but the disk is 100% loaded, consider a disk or storage issue. Do not change all network settings in sequence.

If the problem persists

If the pure network test is good and copying is slow, check the disks, the amount of small files and the server load. If the network itself is slow, please provide information for both adapters, switch and cables; 2.5G on one end is not enough.
