The print queue is stuck

Topic #185 · Updated · Pataisoma.lt

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Open the stalled printer's queue and cancel pending jobs, then reboot the printer. If it doesn't help, Win+R > services.msc find Print Spooler and select Restart. If cleaning the queue files is necessary, stop the service first and follow the official instructions; only the contents of the queue folder are cleaned, not other Windows files, and pending jobs are lost.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Canceling pending jobs

Start by opening the queue and canceling the jobs, then reboot the printer.

    Steps to follow

    1. Press the Windows logo key and I together on your keyboard to open Settings.
    2. Select Bluetooth and devices.
    3. Select "Printers and Scanners".
    4. Select your exact printer and "Open Print Queue".
    5. Select Cancel for a stuck job; wait for it to be uninstalled and verify that the correct device is selected.
    6. Send one simple test sheet from the program. In Windows 10, start from Devices > Printers and scanners.
  2. Reloading the Print Spooler

services.msc, select Print Spooler > Restart if jobs remain stuck.

    Steps to follow

    1. Save your work and Windows+R type services.msc, then Enter.
    2. Find Print Spooler in the list. Select Restart on the right. An administrator may be required.
    3. Wait, open the print queue and send a single sheet. If the service stops again, check the log and driver.
  3. Cleaning queue files

Clean queue files only after stopping service and according to official instructions; pending jobs will be lost.

    Steps to follow

    1. Note: Pending jobs from the computer's print queues will be removed. Coordinate the action on the work computer with the administrator.
    2. Windows+R > services.msc open Print Spooler and select Stop; if you don't have the right, stop.
    3. Type %WINDIR%\System32\spool\PRINTERS in the address bar of your file browser. According to the official instructions, only delete the files in this queue folder, not the folder itself or other system files.
    4. Return to Print Spooler, select Start, and resend the document. If in doubt about a folder, contact an administrator.

If the problem persists

If the queue is not freed, stop the Print Spooler and clean only the print queue files according to the official instructions. Pending jobs will be removed; do not delete other system files.
