MacBook keyboard not working in login window

Topic #276 · Updated · Pataisoma.lt

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Check the login screen keyboard language and Caps Lock. Try a wired USB keyboard directly or through a compatible adapter without an additional hub. If characters cannot be entered in other environments as well, there is a possible hardware failure. In Recovery or pre-unlock, the recognition of the external keyboard may differ, so this test alone does not confirm the final diagnosis.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Input language and Caps Lock

In the login window, check the language and Caps Lock so that you don't mistake an incorrect password for a keyboard malfunction.

    Steps to follow

    1. View the keyboard input language on the login screen or menu bar; select normal.
    2. Check the Caps Lock, its indicator may show an enabled state.
    3. Once logged in, open TextEdit and test text without typing your password publicly. If the same physical buttons do not work, use an external keyboard comparison.
  2. Wired external keyboard

Connect a compatible keyboard without a hub and compare; its detection in Recovery may vary.

    Steps to follow

    1. If the problem is after pouring, turn off the device and do not continue the tests.
    2. Connect a wired external keyboard directly to a suitable USB or through a compatible adapter, without an additional hub.
    3. Open a text editor or in the login field, safely check that the keys are entered; do not display your password publicly.
    4. If the external one works and the same internal buttons don't, this helps determine the problem with the keyboard. Detection of Recovery devices may vary; do not disassemble the housing.

If the problem persists

Check your keyboard language and try a wired keyboard without a hub. If the login doesn't work because of the password, that's another problem; don't diagnose a hardware failure just from a login error.
