MacBook with butterfly keyboard repeats or skips letters

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

The Butterfly MacBook keyboard can skip a letter or type multiple with one click. First, separate the mechanics of the internal keyboard from the application or key repeat settings.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Testing with a different program and keyboard

Determine if the error follows an internal key.

    Steps to follow

    1. Open TextEdit and slowly press the problem key a few times in plain text.
    2. Check the same key in another application. Note if the double character appears or if the click is skipped.
    3. Connect an external keyboard and try again. If it works, it's more likely an internal keyboard problem.
    4. If the letters only repeat when you hold down the key for a longer time, check the repetition speed and delay in the macOS Keyboard settings.
  2. Keyboard cleaning provided by Apple

Only suitable for models whose official instructions allow this method.

    Steps to follow

    1. Turn off your Mac and unplug the charger. Check Apple's keyboard cleaning instructions to see if your model is included.
    2. Hold the computer at an angle of approximately 75 degrees and apply compressed air from the distance specified in the instructions, holding the can correctly.
    3. Briefly blow across the keyboard from left to right, then repeat by turning the computer to each side according to Apple's diagram.
    4. Enable and retry TextEdit. Do not peel off the key cover or pour liquids under it.

If the problem persists

If the official cleaning does not help and the external keyboard works normally, a check of the keyboard mechanism is required. Check the available repair programs according to the exact model and current Apple conditions; an old forum post does not guarantee a free repair.
