Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
Dell XPS 15 9500 touchpad mechanical wobble is different from incorrect pointer sensitivity. First, check that the entire surface is not raised: it may be pushed by a swollen battery, and then the tests should be stopped.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Evaluation of the mechanical feature
Distinguish between wobble and hull deformation.
Steps to follow
- Turn off the computer and disconnect the charger. Place it on a flat table.
- Look at the edges of the touchpad and the seams of the case. If the surface is raised or the gaps have increased, do not press on it and do not charge the device.
- If there is no deformation, very gently check the normal click on the left and right; do not press harder to "insert" the part.
- Record where the extra click is heard and if the touchpad moves before the normal click.
Temporary use and repair preparation
If the housing is intact, distinguish between control and mechanical problems.
Steps to follow
- Connect an external mouse and check if the cursor moves normally with it.
- In Windows Settings, go to Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad. If mechanical clicks are not reliable, temporarily use a mouse.
- Keep a copy of important files while the computer is stable and there are no signs of battery bloat.
- For service, specify the XPS 15 9500 model and the exact location of the wobble; mechanical play is not usually eliminated by the driver.
If the problem persists
If there is only mechanical looseness, the touchpad mount and assembly are checked at the service. If there is a raised surface or a split case, stop charging and send the device for a battery check. Do not put paper or glue in the gaps.
