Troubleshooting guide

The computer turns on but does not display a video

If you can hear the fans, see the power lights, but the screen remains black, the computer is getting power, but the video circuit or boot process is not working properly. Start with the screen, signal source and cable. If there is not even a manufacturer's logo, hardware diagnostics are more often required.

The most common symptoms

  • The screen is completely black, even though the computer is running.
  • The monitor shows "No signal" or a similar message.
  • The manufacturer's logo appears, but then the image disappears.
  • There is an image on the external monitor, but not on the laptop screen.
  • Colored lines, blocks, flickering or distorted images are visible.
  • The image appears only when the screen angle is changed.

Possible reasons

The problem may be related to an incorrect monitor input, damaged HDMI or other video cable, dock, screen brightness, or sleep mode. Internal faults include the display matrix, lighting, display cable, RAM, graphics card, motherboard or BIOS. If the logo is visible and the image disappears when Windows starts, there may be a driver or operating system problem.

What can be safely checked?

  1. Check that the monitor is turned on and the correct signal source is selected.
  2. Disconnect and reconnect the video cable firmly at both ends after turning off the equipment.
  3. If you have a suitable cable or monitor that is known to work, try them.
  4. Disconnect the dock and any unnecessary USB devices.
  5. On your laptop, increase the brightness and use the manufacturer-provided screen switching key.
  6. If you hear Windows start up, press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B once. This combination reinitializes the Windows video driver.
  7. Take a picture of the lines or other distortions - their nature can help with diagnosis.

Important - what not to do: Do not tear the screen, touch the power supply or try to heat the video card. Do not switch internal components while the computer is on. If the screen is broken, subjected to heavy pressure or the battery is swollen, do not use the device.

When to contact the master?

Contact diagnostics if there is no video with a different cable and monitor, even the manufacturer's logo is not displayed, startup error signals are heard, or the image is distorted on all screens. Repeated lines and flickering may progress, so it's a good idea to save available data before further testing.

Frequently asked questions

Does the external monitor accurately show that the laptop screen is broken?

Not always. A working external display narrows the search for the fault, but the absence of an internal display can still be caused by the display cable, lighting, settings or the operating mode of the video card.

Why is the logo visible but the screen goes black when Windows starts?

In this case, the hardware video output is at least partially functional. The cause could be Windows, video drivers, a failed update, or a disk error.

Can I continue to use my computer if I see video artifacts?

Important data should be saved and heavy load should be avoided. Artifacts can be caused by the display, cable, overheating, video memory, or GPU and require verification.
