Troubleshooting guide

The computer does not turn on - what can be checked?

If the computer does not respond at all when you press the power button, first check the power source and disconnect the external devices. Then disconnect the power and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds. If the computer still does not respond, it needs to be diagnosed.

The most common symptoms

  • No lights, no fans, no sounds.
  • The power light turns on and off briefly.
  • The fans are just whirring and the computer shuts down immediately.
  • The laptop does not respond when the charger is connected.
  • The charging connector wobbles, heats up, or makes contact only when the cable is moved.

Possible reasons

The cause may be a non-functioning electrical outlet, a damaged cable, an incorrect or defective charger, a dead battery, a power outlet, or the power button. A power supply failure is possible in a desktop computer. A shorting peripheral, motherboard, BIOS, or other component problem is preventing you from turning on less often.

What can be safely checked?

  1. Test the outlet with another simple electrical appliance and temporarily bypass the extension cord.
  2. Check the cable and the charger. Do not use them if damage is visible, if there is a musty smell or if the body is unusually hot.
  3. Disconnect USB devices, docks, external drives, memory cards, and other accessories.
  4. Disconnect the power. If the battery is removed without tools, remove it. Hold the power button for 15-20 seconds, then connect the original charger and try once.
  5. On a desktop computer, check that the power supply switch is in the "I" position. Do not touch the voltage selector switch.
  6. Note which lights come on and if you hear any clicks, beeps, or fan motion.

Important - what not to do: Do not disassemble the power supply unit or charger: dangerous voltage may remain in their components even after the power has been disconnected. Don't plug in a random charger just because its plug fits. Do not short contacts, heat the motherboard, or try to turn on a dirty or musty device.

When to contact the master?

Diagnostics is required if the computer does not respond with a reliable power source, shuts down immediately, or the power connector falters and heats up. Stop trying to turn it on immediately after spilling, dropping, sparking or smelling burning. Computer diagnostics cost from €10, and repairs are free.

Frequently asked questions

Does computer not turning on mean data loss?

No. A power failure by itself does not mean that the SSD or HDD has failed. However, repeated failed starts can worsen the condition of some failures, so it is better to diagnose a computer with important data first.

Can I use another computer's charger?

Only if the voltage, polarity, connection, communication standard specified by the manufacturer completely match and the power is sufficient. A similar connection alone does not confirm compatibility.

Why does the power light flash on and off?

This can result in a security trip, power failure, battery failure, RAM failure, or motherboard failure. A specific component cannot be determined from this feature alone.
