Roomba j7 obstacle photos are dark or unclear

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

The quality of obstacle photos can be limited by lens dirt, lighting or the nature of the image itself. This is not the same as full navigation. Start with a clean front window and a safe test in a normally lit room.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Camera exterior and lighting inspection

    Do not use abrasive cleaners.

    Steps to follow

    1. Stop the robot and clean the front camera window with a soft dry cloth according to the j7 manual.
    2. Check that it is not covered by film, a non-original bumper accessory or dirt.
    3. Choose normal lighting without direct glare and one safe, clear object.
    4. Run a short job and compare the new obstacle sample with the previous ones.
  2. Comparison of widgets and general detection

Viewing photos is a separate feature.

    Steps to follow

    1. Check the official iRobot app version and obstacle view settings if available.
    2. Compare whether the robot avoids the obstacle, even if the given picture is not very detailed.
    3. If the images are always black and the detection has deteriorated, write down the firmware and app versions.
    4. Provide a secure sample for support; do not open the camera body yourself.

Features, menus and error codes depend on the exact robot and dock model and software version. Instructions for another series may not apply.

If the problem persists

If the camera continuously shows black or distorted images in different rooms, please provide a non-private example to support. When checking the image, do not include documents or other people in the frame without their knowledge.

Request a repair

Before you begin: Before maintenance, stop and switch off the robot and unplug the dock. Do not touch moving parts during operation. If liquid reaches electrical components or the battery is damaged, do not power the device on again until it has been inspected.
