Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

"Power surge on the USB port" warns of a USB power circuit problem or excessive demand. Do not try to connect the same accessory over and over again. First, remove any damaged cable or connector.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Disconnecting the problematic attachment

    First, disconnect the suspected overload.

    Steps to follow

    1. Disconnect the accessory and its cable. If the connector is very hot, sparks or melts, turn off the power and do not touch the damaged area.
    2. Make a note of which add-on the message appeared on. Do not connect it to another computer yet.
    3. Turn off the computer and inspect the outside of the disconnected cable and socket without disassembling or inserting tools inside.
    4. If there are bent contacts, foreign objects or burning, stop and ask for repair.
  2. Checking power requirements

Only suitable for intact equipment with no signs of short circuit.

    Steps to follow

    1. Check the accessory manual to see if it requires a separate power supply or a powered USB hub.
    2. If such a power supply is provided, connect only a compliant adapter, not a random one with a similar plug.
    3. Restart your computer without the problematic accessory and check if the warning no longer occurs.
    4. If the warning remains with empty slots, stop testing new accessories and send the computer for diagnostics.

If the problem persists

If the warning is displayed after disconnecting all accessories or the socket is broken, have the computer checked for the socket and the controller. Do not insert metal tools into the USB. A burning smell or a hot plug means that testing should be stopped.
