Monitors and display problems

The dark areas of the OLED monitor only flicker with VRR

Topic #362 · Updated · Pataisoma.lt

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

In an OLED display, the variable refresh rate (VRR) can change the brightness of dark areas under some conditions. This often becomes apparent when jumping FPS. However, flicker, which remains even without VRR or monitor menu, must be checked separately.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Comparison without VRR

Change one option and the same scene.

    Steps to follow

    1. Choose an area of the game where the flicker is clearly visible and write down the resolution and Hz.
    2. Disable G-SYNC / FreeSync / Adaptive-Sync in the GPU management program or monitor menu depending on the hardware you are using.
    3. Repeat the same scene without changing other graphics options.
    4. If flicker disappears only without VRR, check frame stability; if it remains, compare the cable and another video source.
  2. Selecting a more consistent FPS

Reduce frequency fluctuations if the cause is related to VRR.

    Steps to follow

    1. Turn on the game's FPS display and watch if the flickering coincides with significant drops in frame rate.
    2. In the game menu, select the frame rate that the system usually maintains without exceeding the range supported by the monitor.
    3. Reduce one heavy graphics option and compare the same scene.
    4. If your monitor has a documented flicker reduction feature, read about its trade-offs. There is no universal uniform Hz reduction for all displays.

If the problem persists

If it flickers even after VRR is turned off, with a different cable, or without a computer signal, contact the monitor manufacturer. VRR Flicker Reduction is not a repair for a faulty power supply or display.
