Screen flickering disappears after limiting game FPS

Topic #409 · Updated · Pataisoma.lt

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

If the flickering is reduced after limiting the FPS, it could be related to VRR and framerate rendering. Need to distinguish this from a cable or power failure. The same scene and one change at a time makes for a more reliable comparison.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Constant FPS test

Choose the frame limit according to the real capacity of your computer.

    Steps to follow

    1. Enable FPS display in the game and select the location where the flicker repeats.
    2. Note the normal and lowest FPS and monitor Hz you see.
    3. Set the game limiter to a frequency that the system supports quite stably and repeat the same scene.
    4. If the flicker decreases along with a more stable FPS, check the influence of VRR in another way.
  2. VRR and signal separation

Check if the phenomenon remains in fixed mode.

    Steps to follow

    1. Note the G-SYNC / FreeSync / Adaptive-Sync status and temporarily disable it according to the equipment you are using.
    2. Repeat the scene with the same resolution and compare if the flicker remains.
    3. If it remains, try another suitable cable and monitor input without changing multiple settings together.
    4. If only with VRR, choose a more stable FPS or documented monitor flicker reduction, considering its limitations.

If the problem persists

If it flickers even in fixed frequency mode and another video source, check the monitor separately. There is no universal number for how much FPS or Hz to reduce for all screens: it depends on the VRR range and the game.
