GPU usage stays at 100% after closing the game

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

A GPU at 100% idle time could mean video decoding, background computation, a browser process, or an unwanted program. A percentage alone does not prove a faulty board. The specific process and type of GPU activity must be determined.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Setting the load process

Find out who is actually using the GPU.

    Steps to follow

    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open a list of processes or details in Task Manager.
    2. If necessary, enable Show GPU and GPU engine in the column menu, then sort by GPU load.
    3. Write down the name of the process and whether it uses 3D, Video Decode, Copy or another engine.
    4. Close the known program from its menu and check if the load drops. Do not blindly terminate unknown system processes.
  2. Application or security check

    Follow the source you found.

    Steps to follow

    1. If the browser is loading, close the video, animation or game tabs one by one and check the plug-ins.
    2. If the recording or streaming program is loading, stop the recording and try running it with Windows.
    3. In case of an unknown process, open its file location via Task Manager and run Windows Security > Virus Protection > Full Scan.
    4. If the load persists without a clear process, check the official video driver and the readings instead of changing the GPU immediately.

If the problem persists

If the source of the load is unknown, do not open "optimization" programs from advertising. Check the system Defender and check the location of the process file. If nothing loads, but the reading is clearly incorrect, compare the official GPU monitor.
