A laptop keyboard registers keypresses by itself after a spill

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Spontaneous key presses after pouring may indicate liquid residues or corrosion. Don't test your computer again: it may work now, but it may crash more later. First, disconnect the power and organize an inspection.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Safe discontinuation

The goal is to reduce the likelihood of additional damage.

    Steps to follow

    1. Turn off the computer and disconnect the charger and external accessories. If there is smoke or intense heat, do not touch the affected area and take care of the safety of the environment.
    2. If the battery is externally removable and can be done safely according to the manual, remove it. Do not disconnect the internal battery without experience.
    3. Dry the exterior with a soft cloth without pressing the liquid over the keys.
    4. Do not load or enable "just to check". Write down the type of liquid, the time and where it got into.
  2. Service and data plan preparation

Rescue data without trying to boot a flooded computer.

    Steps to follow

    1. Submit the device for fluid damage diagnostics as soon as possible, especially if it is a sweet or salty liquid.
    2. Tell the service that the keyboard pressed by itself and whether the device was connected to power after the splash.
    3. Specify which data is important, and if the drive is encrypted, prepare the recovery key.
    4. After cleaning, ask to check the keyboard and board; just plugging in an external keyboard doesn't eliminate the liquid inside.

If the problem persists

Even a dry surface does not confirm that there is no liquid or conductive residue left inside. Needs internal inspection and cleaning, and sometimes keyboard replacement. Rice, a hot blow dryer, and turning it on repeatedly does not fix the problem.
