The MacBook trackpad does not respond

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Disconnect the accessories and use an external mouse to check the Trackpad settings. In the Accessibility section, check the option to ignore the indoor mat when a mouse is connected. If the pad is raised, the case is deformed, or the click has changed, turn off the Mac and do not charge it again - there may be a battery problem. Do not force it.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Trackpad ignore option

With an external mouse, check the access setting to ignore the internal mouse.

    Steps to follow

    1. Click on the Apple icon in the top left and select System Settings.
    2. Select Accessibility.
    3. Select Pointer Control.
    4. If there is "Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse ... is present", turn it off when you want to use the pad as well.
    5. Disconnect the unnecessary mouse and check the cursor.
    6. If the option doesn't exist, don't recreate it with random commands; if the mat is raised, turn the unit off.
  2. Disconnecting accessories

If the options are correct, compare the performance with additional pointer devices disconnected.

    Steps to follow

    1. Save your work and choose Shut Down from the Apple menu. If an update is in progress, do not interrupt it.
    2. Disconnect unnecessary docks, USB drives and accessories; leave the necessary power and control.
    3. Turn on your Mac and repeat the step that didn't work.
    4. If it worked, return the accessories one at a time and check each time. When you find a related accessory, check its compatibility or contact the supplier.
  3. Battery and mechanical inspection

If the case has risen or the click has changed, turn it off and do not charge again; do not press the mat with force.

    Steps to follow

    1. Save important files if your computer or drive is stable. If it makes unusual noises, smells like burning or the battery is swollen, stop testing.
    2. Write down the exact pattern of when the problem started and what action it took to reoccur. Take a picture of the visible error or deformation without opening the case.
    3. Submit a repair request with this information.

If the problem persists

Check the accessibility option to ignore the internal trackpad when a mouse is connected. If the case has risen or the click has changed, turn off the computer and ask for a battery inspection.
