Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
OBS, video filters, or other programs can create a virtual camera. Selecting it without a working video source results in a black screen on the call, although the actual camera is fine.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Choosing a real camera
Suitable when virtual camera functions are not required.
Steps to follow
- In the call app, open the video or camera settings.
- Expand the list of devices and select the actual camera model instead of the "OBS Virtual Camera" or similar entry.
- Check the preview before the call and save the selection if the app asks.
- If only the virtual camera is listed, check the physical camera connection and Windows permissions.
Preparing the virtual camera source
Good if you're deliberately using OBS or another streaming app.
Steps to follow
- Open the official application that creates the virtual camera and select the appropriate scene.
- Add a real camera or other default video source and make sure the image is visible in the app itself.
- Run its virtual camera feature, then select that virtual device in the caller app.
- Check what will be visible to others, especially if the desktop is included in the scene. After you finish the call, stop the virtual camera.
If the problem persists
If a real camera works, choose a virtual one only when you need it and understand its source. If the black screen remains even after selecting a real device in Windows Camera, check the overall performance of the camera separately.
