Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
Plug the flash drive directly into another USB port and look at Disk Management. If a healthy, Windows-supported format partition is visible without a drive letter, it can be assigned. If it shows RAW, unallocated space, or asks to initialize, don't create or format anything as existing files are important. Compare with another computer.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Another USB connection
Try a live socket and another computer without using an untrusted hub.
Steps to follow
- If the drive makes unusual noises, heats up or keeps disappearing and the files are important, don't repeat this test - disconnect the drive.
- Close its files and disconnect safely. Instead of a hub, connect directly to another computer's USB port with a suitable cable.
- If the device requires a separate power supply, connect only the dedicated adapter. You can compare on your other computer.
- If prompted to format or initialize, select Cancel. If files open, copy the most important ones to another drive first.
Drive letter assignment
Only for a healthy partition in a supported format without a letter, assign it in Disk Management.
Steps to follow
- Apply only if the media files must remain and the partition appears healthy, in a supported format - not RAW and not unallocated.
- Right-click Start and select "Disk Management" and reliably identify the USB storage device by capacity.
- To the right of the partition on it, select "Change drive letter and routes" > "Add", select an available letter and confirm.
- Check the files in the file browser. If the menu doesn't work or format/initialization is suggested, cancel - don't create the partition.
Data recovery assessment
If you see RAW, unallocated space, or an initialization request, do not create the partition; critical files require recovery evaluation.
Steps to follow
- Save important files if your computer or drive is stable. If it makes unusual noises, smells like burning or the battery is swollen, stop testing.
- Write down the exact pattern of when the problem started and what action it took to reoccur. Take a picture of the visible error or deformation without opening the case.
- Submit a repair request with this information.
If the problem persists
If Disk Management shows RAW, Unallocated space, or asks to initialize, don't create or format anything. Important files require recovery diagnostics instead of creating a new partition.
