Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Try the cable, Disk Utility > View > Show All Devices, another computer. If the disk is offered to initialize, do not rush - you may lose data.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Cable and another computer

Connect directly with another suitable cable and compare on another compatible computer.

    Steps to follow

    1. If the drive makes unusual noises, heats up or keeps disappearing and the files are important, don't repeat this test - disconnect the drive.
    2. Close its files and disconnect safely. Instead of a hub, connect directly to another computer's USB port with a suitable cable.
    3. If the device requires a separate power supply, connect only the dedicated adapter. You can compare on your other computer.
    4. If prompted to format or initialize, select Cancel. If files open, copy the most important ones to another drive first.
  2. Format and encryption check

Disk Utility > Show All Devices check detection, format and need to unlock; do not initialize existing files.

    Steps to follow

    1. Command+Space to open Disk Utility and View > Show All Devices.
    2. Identify the external drive by name and capacity, see the format and whether it needs legal unlocking.
    3. If it's NTFS or BitLocker, check read and unlock support; can be copied to your Windows computer.
    4. If it asks to initialize or missing important files, select Cancel. Erase is not a secure access repair.
  3. Data Recovery Diagnostics

If the drive disappears or important files remain, do not format and evaluate the recovery.

    Steps to follow

    1. Save important files if your computer or drive is stable. If it makes unusual noises, smells like burning or the battery is swollen, stop testing.
    2. Write down the exact pattern of when the problem started and what action it took to reoccur. Take a picture of the visible error or deformation without opening the case.
    3. Submit a repair request with this information.

If the problem persists

If the drive is visible but won't mount, check its format and encryption on another compatible computer. If you are asked to initialize or missing important files, do not format anything.
