Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

DO NOT FORMAT if there is important data. Check another cable and computer; if the disc makes unusual noises, do not try again.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Comparison of cable and power

If the drive is stable and does not make any unusual noises, try another suitable cable or connector.

    Steps to follow

    1. If the drive makes unusual noises, heats up or keeps disappearing and the files are important, don't repeat this test - disconnect the drive.
    2. Close its files and disconnect safely. Instead of a hub, connect directly to another computer's USB port with a suitable cable.
    3. If the device requires a separate power supply, connect only the dedicated adapter. You can compare on your other computer.
    4. If prompted to format or initialize, select Cancel. If files open, copy the most important ones to another drive first.
  2. Another computer

If the test is safe, check on another computer; do not confirm the formatting request.

  3. Data recovery

If the disk crashes, disappears or the files are very important, disconnect and contact; this is not a good case for intensive CHKDSK.

    Steps to follow

    1. Save important files if your computer or drive is stable. If it makes unusual noises, smells like burning or the battery is swollen, stop testing.
    2. Write down the exact pattern of when the problem started and what action it took to reoccur. Take a picture of the visible error or deformation without opening the case.
    3. Submit a repair request with this information.

If the problem persists

If the files are important and the drive is unstable, disconnect it and ask for data recovery. Do not repeat CHKDSK repair, formatting, or long scans on a potentially failing drive.
