How do you keep your most important files safe?

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Keep at least two copies in different places; periodically check to see if the backup can be restored. Synchronization alone is not a complete backup.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Separate media

Copy important files to another media and keep at least one copy safe from the same failure.

    Steps to follow

    1. Connect another media that has enough free space and is not the only copy of important files.
    2. Open your documents and photos folders. Highlight the most important files and choose Copy instead of Cut.
    3. In the other media, create a new folder and select Paste. Wait for the copying to finish.
    4. Open multiple copied documents and photos. If the reading stops or the disk disappears, do not try again - contact the master to save the files.
  2. Versioning backup repository

If you use a cloud or backup service, check versions and recovery; synchronization is not a copy in itself.

    Steps to follow

    1. Check your backup or cloud service to see if it stores previous versions, not just the current file that's synced.
    2. Make a small test document and save a copy according to the official wizard.
    3. Check the recovery to another file or folder of yours.
    4. Keep at least one copy of important documents safe from the same accidental deletion or device failure.

If the problem persists

Choose a copy order and try to restore multiple files. At least one copy must be protected against the same failure or accidental deletion, such as a disconnected media or versioned storage.
