Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
SMART Media and Data Integrity Errors are an important signal of SSD health. In the case of the Samsung 980 Pro, save the data first, and only then check the firmware. Updating is not a way to recover files that have already been corrupted.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
A copy of the most important data
The first goal is not to lose files that are still being read.
Steps to follow
- Do not install new programs or run SSD speed or full write tests.
- Back up your most important documents, photos, and work files to another healthy media, starting with the irreplaceable ones.
- Open a few copied files on another drive to verify that the copy is readable.
- If the copy fails or the drive disappears, stop retries and consider professional data recovery.
Samsung diagnostics after a copy
Check the specific model and official information.
Steps to follow
- Download the official Magician from the Samsung website if your system and connection method supports it.
- Write down the SSD model, capacity, firmware and SMART error readings; don't just rely on the "Good" label.
- Check if firmware is offered for this model and read the update terms. Do not update an unstable disk before the copy.
- Even after the update, monitor the number of errors. If they are already fixed or increasing, consider replacing the drive rather than just keeping the data on it.
If the problem persists
If the errors are increasing, the drive switches to read-only mode or disappears, stop using it for work. Transfer important data that is unavailable to recovery specialists, and apply for the SSD replacement itself separately.
