Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
A burning smell, a warm plug or plastic near the charging socket may indicate a bad contact or a power failure. In this case, do not turn on the computer again just to check and do not connect another charger until the inspection.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Safe power off
Protect people and prevent the fault from spreading.
Steps to follow
- Stop using your computer. If it is safe to do so, disconnect the power supply to the charger from the outlet or safety switch.
- Do not touch hot or heated metal and do not use water on electrical equipment.
- When it is safe and the equipment has cooled, disconnect the accessories without tearing the damaged connector.
- Do not charge or apply pressure to the device. If the situation worsens, withdraw from the dangerous area and contact emergency services.
Collection of repair information
Schedule diagnostics without restarting.
Steps to follow
- Take a picture of the visible damage on the outside without taking apart the device or inserting objects into the socket.
- Make a note of what charger, cable or dock was used and whether it was original or a replacement.
- Tell the service in advance about the smell and accompanying; also submit the charger for inspection if it is safe to transport.
- Indicate the need to save data before repair. Merely replacing the socket plastic is not enough until the electrical cause of the failure is checked.
If the problem persists
The device and charger must be checked by a specialist. If there is smoke, sparks, or the surface is very hot, take personal safety first and only turn off the power if it is safe to do so. Do not pull a damaged plug with force.
