Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
If the update is still in progress, don't abort it just because of a temporary black screen. Check your monitor input and video cable, try Win+Ctrl+Shift+B. If Windows is already loaded, press Win+P to check the output. When the recovery environment is available, it is possible to check safe mode or uninstall the last update; save data and BitLocker key before recovery.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Video output check
If Windows is already loaded, check the connection and Win+P; Win+Ctrl+Shift+B can restore the graphics driver.
Steps to follow
- If the computer appears to be on, press Windows, Ctrl, Shift, and B at the same time. The screen may flicker.
- Press Windows and P; if the menu is visible, select the appropriate screen. Don't blindly change a lot of settings.
- Check its Input and cable on the external display. If the screen doesn't work since power on, Windows key combinations won't fix it.
Driver return
If the crash started after a graphics update and Safe Mode is available, roll back to a previous compatible driver.
Steps to follow
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager. If Windows won't start, first go to safe mode according to the related topic.
- Expand the related device group: Display adapters for video error, Network adapters for network error. Do not modify the device without knowing it.
- Right-click the device, select Properties, then the Manager tab.
- Click "Return Driver". If the button is gray, there is no previous version - skip this method.
- Complete the wizard, save your work and reload. Repeat the action that caused the problem; do not change other drivers at the same time.
Uninstalling the update in the recovery environment
If the system does not boot, check the uninstallation of the last update in the recovery environment with a copy and the BitLocker key.
Steps to follow
- If the login window is available, hold Shift and choose Power > Restart. If not, use a ready-made Windows recovery USB > Repair your PC.
- Have BitLocker recovery key; menu, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall updates.
- If the problem is right after an update, choose to uninstall the last quality update if the system allows it. A copy of the files must be prepared before the restore.
- Reboot and test launch. If the option is not available or the drive is unstable, do not try boot commands randomly.
If the problem persists
If the login screen is available, hold Shift and select Restart and open the startup settings in the recovery environment. Take care of data and BitLocker key before system recovery.
