WinRE update fails with 0x80070643

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Some Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates may fail with 0x80070643, for example, when their conditions do not match the state of the recovery partition. However, this code is also used for other installation errors, so check the KB number first.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Is the error really related to WinRE

Check the package and current recovery environment.

    Steps to follow

    1. Note the KB number and update name in the Windows Update history.
    2. Check Microsoft's official page for that package to see if it's a WinRE update, its requirements, and whether it's still relevant.
    3. Run reagentc /info in an administrator Command Prompt. This informational command shows the status and location of WinRE; it does not change.
    4. Save the result. Don't try to blindly rebuild a disabled environment or an unknown partition.
  2. Creating a recovery partition plan

This method is designed to safely prepare the necessary repair.

    Steps to follow

    1. Copy important data and verify that you have the system encryption recovery key.
    2. Record the order and sizes of system disk partitions in Disk Management without deleting them.
    3. Compare with your specific KB's official manual. The different layout means that a foreign sample of commands may not work.
    4. If you need to reduce, delete or create partitions, leave it to a professional or only follow the exact official procedure with a verified copy.

If the problem persists

If you need to modify the recovery partition, do not do so without a copy and the BitLocker key. Older sample KBs may be replaced by newer packages. Do not fix unrelated program installation 0x80070643 by deleting the WinRE partition.
