The screen goes blank after installing an NVIDIA or AMD driver

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

If possible, open Windows Recovery Environment and Startup Settings, select Safe Mode. Try rolling back the previous graphics driver in Device Manager; if not, use the appropriate manufacturer's package. On the laptop, evaluate the compatibility of both GPUs. If the image is not present and before Windows starts, fixing the driver alone is unlikely to be enough.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Returning the previous driver

If Safe Mode is available, revert to the previous GPU driver in Device Manager.

    Steps to follow

    1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager. If Windows won't start, first go to safe mode according to the related topic.
    2. Expand the related device group: Display adapters for video error, Network adapters for network error. Do not modify the device without knowing it.
    3. Right-click the device, select Properties, then the Manager tab.
    4. Click "Return Driver". If the button is gray, there is no previous version - skip this method.
    5. Complete the wizard, save your work and reload. Repeat the action that caused the problem; do not change other drivers at the same time.
  2. Installing a compatible package

If there is no return, please choose the PC or GPU manufacturer's package that is appropriate for your model and system.

    Steps to follow

    1. Note down the exact computer model from the sticker or Settings > System > About.
    2. Open the official support page of the computer manufacturer, enter the model and select the version of Windows installed.
    3. Download the following package: Graphics, Sound, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB/Chip or Special Keys. Don't use generic "all drivers" sites.
    4. Run the downloaded installation file, run the manufacturer's wizard and reboot if prompted.
    5. Try the function that didn't work again. If there is no network, download the package on another device and transfer to USB.
  3. Hardware check

If there is no image and BIOS, the problem is likely broader than the Windows driver.

    Steps to follow

    1. Save important files if your computer or drive is stable. If it makes unusual noises, smells like burning or the battery is swollen, stop testing.
    2. Write down the exact pattern of when the problem started and what action it took to reoccur. Take a picture of the visible error or deformation without opening the case.
    3. Submit a repair request with this information.

If the problem persists

If the image is present in Safe Mode, try Device Manager > Driver Rollback. For a laptop, first choose a compatible package from its manufacturer, especially with dual GPUs.
