Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE means that the video driver or GPU failed to recover from a crash. If it started after an update, try a previous compatible driver; otherwise, check the manufacturer's package, GPU temperature, and known frequency changes. An external video cable is not a common fix for this STOP code. Recurring requires graphics and power diagnostics.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Returning the graphics driver
If the crash started after a GPU update, try a previous compatible version.
Steps to follow
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager. If Windows won't start, first go to safe mode according to the related topic.
- Expand the related device group: Display adapters for video error, Network adapters for network error. Do not modify the device without knowing it.
- Right-click the device, select Properties, then the Manager tab.
- Click "Return Driver". If the button is gray, there is no previous version - skip this method.
- Complete the wizard, save your work and reload. Repeat the action that caused the problem; do not change other drivers at the same time.
GPU stability check
Check temperature and roll back known GPU frequency changes.
Steps to follow
- Make a note if you changed the GPU frequencies or voltages yourself with the manufacturer's software.
- If so, return only your known change to the former standard value in it; if not, don't assume anything.
- Check the temperature through the official diagnostics and the normal program. If it shuts down or the image is still BIOS, stop the test and ask for hardware.
Graphics and power repair
If it repeats or errors are visible before Windows, hardware diagnostics are required.
Steps to follow
- Save important files if your computer or drive is stable. If it makes unusual noises, smells like burning or the battery is swollen, stop testing.
- Write down the exact pattern of when the problem started and what action it took to reoccur. Take a picture of the visible error or deformation without opening the case.
- Submit a repair request with this information.
If the problem persists
If it started after a graphics driver update, roll back to a previous compatible version. If video errors are visible even before Windows starts, GPU, power and display diagnostics are the priority.
