Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
Linux black screen with NVIDIA can be caused by driver and kernel mismatch, Secure Boot or video session. First, try accessing a previous working kernel or recovery environment without reinstalling the system.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Flashing a previous kernel or recovery
Suitable if the system crashed after the update.
Steps to follow
- In the launch menu, select the distribution's "Advanced options" or similar section, if it exists.
- Try a previously working kernel or official recovery mode. The specific menu invocation sequence depends on the distribution.
- If it fails, save the important files and write down the working kernel version with the command uname -r.
- Check your update history and don't remove the last working kernel until the next one is fixed.
Resetting the official NVIDIA driver
Use one installation method supported by the distribution.
Steps to follow
- If a terminal is available, write down the GPU model with the lspci command and check that the package installation has finished.
- On Ubuntu, use Additional Drivers or the driver selection listed in the official documentation; in other distributions – their equivalent.
- Do not mix the manufacturer's .run installer with distribution packages. If Secure Boot is enabled, check the module signing.
- Reload and check the image. If the nomodeset diagnostic mode is used temporarily, do not consider it a full-fledged GPU acceleration fix.
If the problem persists
If the image is not present even in BIOS or when booting another known suitable system, check the hardware. For Linux patching, please provide the distro, its version, GPU and kernel. Do not blindly execute commands from another distribution.
