Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Check disk health and file system errors. If the disk is unstable, copy the data first, instead of intensively repairing the file system.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Data saving and disk evaluation

If there are read errors, first save the files and assess the physical condition of the drive.

    Steps to follow

    1. If the drive disappears, cracks or files are wrong when copying, don't do a long test - first a copy or a professional recovery evaluation.
    2. In a stable Windows Start, right-click > Device Manager > Disk Devices, and write down the exact model of the disk.
    3. On the official website of its manufacturer, find the health viewer for the model and open only information or health status.
    4. Write down warnings, do not try erasure, firmware or long tests. Even the good condition of the SMART does not rule out all problems; give the result to the master.
  2. Repairing the file system

Only consider checking the file system if you have a copy and a stable drive; A CHKDSK repair changes its data.

    Steps to follow

    1. Only use this method if you have a copy of the files and are sure that the drive is stable. If it disappears or pops, stop.
    2. In the "This PC" file explorer, right-click the required drive and select Properties > Tools.
    3. Click Check next to error checking; review the message before deciding on the proposed fix.
    4. If the fix requires a reboot or changes the file system, confirm with a copy only. Do not try to eliminate repeated errors with a new intensive test.

If the problem persists

In case of repeated read errors or a disappearing disk, stop the tests and save the files. CHKDSK with repair parameters modifies the file system, so it is not the first step on a failing disk.
