Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Historical code INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE; check boot disk availability and controller mode changes.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Previous disk controller mode

If error after changing AHCI/RAID/VMD, please revert to previous mode instead of trying all.

    Steps to follow

    1. Apply only if the error appeared immediately after changing your AHCI, RAID or VMD; if you haven't changed anything, don't use this method.
    2. Have a copy of data and BitLocker recovery key. According to the model manual, open BIOS, often pressing F2 or Del during startup, but the button may be different.
    3. Find exactly the storage mode option that was changed and revert to the known previous value. Do not touch other BIOS options.
    4. Save according to the command shown by BIOS and test the startup. Do not try consecutive modes without knowing the previous value.
  2. Boot disk diagnostics

This is the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE code; if the drive is not detected, first examine the hardware and save the files.

    Steps to follow

    1. Save important files if your computer or drive is stable. If it makes unusual noises, smells like burning or the battery is swollen, stop testing.
    2. Write down the exact pattern of when the problem started and what action it took to reoccur. Take a picture of the visible error or deformation without opening the case.
    3. Submit a repair request with this information.

If the problem persists

Compare with topic INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE: this is the same type of error. Check if AHCI, RAID or VMD mode was changed before the crash; don't try them all in a row.
