How do I choose a laptop performance mode?

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

An energy-saving mode can limit performance. Compare operation with the correct charger connected and change one power setting at a time. A higher-performance mode can increase fan noise and energy use, so it need not remain enabled all the time.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Compare Windows power modes

Setting names depend on the Windows version and laptop model.

    Steps to follow

    1. Connect a charger with the manufacturer-specified output directly to the laptop. Check that no low-power adapter warning appears.
    2. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery. Find Power mode and note the current selection.
    3. If available, select Best performance for plugged-in use. In Windows 10, the option may be under the battery icon or Power Options.
    4. Repeat the same task and compare speed and noise. If there is no benefit or the laptop becomes excessively hot, return to a balanced mode.
  2. Check the manufacturer's quiet mode

The manufacturer's control application may have a separate performance profile.

    Steps to follow

    1. Look in Start for the official control application already installed for your model, such as Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS or the manufacturer's equivalent.
    2. In its power or cooling section, check whether a quiet or battery-saving profile is selected.
    3. Select the normal balanced profile and compare operation. Try a performance profile only if it is provided for that model.
    4. Record which combination of Windows and manufacturer profiles helped. Do not enable several unfamiliar tuning utilities together.

If the problem persists

If the charger is not recognized or speed drops sharply after a few minutes, have the adapter and cooling checked. Do not disable thermal protection.
