Linux bluetooth headset connects but no audio output

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Linux Bluetooth pairing does not yet confirm that a working audio profile and output is selected. First, check your system sound options. Different distributions use different versions of PipeWire or PulseAudio, so don't mix their packages.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Output and profile selection

Good when the headset is shown as connected.

    Steps to follow

    1. Open the Sound system settings and select headphones, non-PC speakers, or an HDMI display as the output.
    2. Check system and application volume and mute.
    3. If a profile is provided, select a supported stereo A2DP mode for music. Talk mode requires a headset microphone.
    4. Run System Test Sound and another program. If only one is running, check the output of the program.
  2. Relinking and official updates

Separate the old binding from the audio packet problem.

    Steps to follow

    1. Disconnect the headphones from the phone or second computer so that it does not pick up the sound.
    2. In the Linux Bluetooth menu, unpair only these headphones and re-pair according to their instructions.
    3. Update supported Bluetooth and audio packages through the distribution's official update tool.
    4. Reboot and check the output. If logs are required, first determine whether the system uses PipeWire or PulseAudio; do not run both replacement scripts at the same time.

If the problem persists

If the headset only works through one profile, check the compatibility of the specific audio server and Bluetooth packets. If the connection is also lost on the other device, check the headset itself. Don't uninstall system services just because the sound is quiet.
