Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
System Settings > Sound > Output; choose internal speakers, headphones or an external monitor.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
System audio output
System Settings > Sound > Output select the desired device.
Steps to follow
- Click on the Apple icon in the top left and select System Settings.
- Select Sound.
- Select Output.
- Click the speakers, headphones, or display you want from the list.
- Check Mute and volume, play a known sound file. If the HDMI controller is inactive, adjust on the TV itself.
Application or HDMI volume
If the output is selected but silent, check the program and monitor or TV volume controls.
Steps to follow
- In the program, check its own volume and selected output, if any.
- If you are using an HDMI TV or monitor, use the remote control or its buttons to cancel Mute and increase the volume.
- Play another known recording; if it works in one app, check the setting in the other.
If the problem persists
Check that the selected output is not muted in the application. HDMI volume may need to be adjusted on the TV or monitor; selecting a device does not increase its volume by itself.
