Horizontal lines appeared on the screen

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Check the external monitor and cable. If the lines are still BIOS, it's likely a display, cable, or GPU failure, not a Windows problem.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Cable and external monitor test

Compare with the other wire and screen, especially if the lines change when you move the cover.

    Steps to follow

    1. Check that the monitor is turned on and that it is possible to open its own menu with the buttons on the body.
    2. In the monitor's Source/Input menu, select the exact jack that the cable is connected to, such as HDMI 1 or DisplayPort.
    3. Turn off the computer and display, reconnect the cable firmly at both ends, bypassing the dock or hub if possible.
    4. Turn it on and check the image. If not, after disconnecting the power, try another suitable cable and, if you have one, another screen.
  2. Screenshot comparison

Open the copy on another device; its result is a guide, but not a definitive diagnosis of the GPU.

    Steps to follow

    1. Windows+Shift+S take a picture of the problematic area of the screen and save the file.
    2. Move the copy to your other device or open it on another working screen.
    3. Compare whether the lines are also visible in the photo. This is only a guide: their absence points more to the screen or cable, but is not a definitive diagnosis.
  3. Hardware repair

If the lines are also visible at BIOS, a screen, cable, or GPU check is needed, not just a Windows fix.

    Steps to follow

    1. Save important files if your computer or drive is stable. If it makes unusual noises, smells like burning or the battery is swollen, stop testing.
    2. Write down the exact pattern of when the problem started and what action it took to reoccur. Take a picture of the visible error or deformation without opening the case.
    3. Submit a repair request with this information.

If the problem persists

Compare the screenshot opened on another device with the visible image. If there are no lines in the photo, check the screen and its connection more closely; it is a guideline, not a definitive diagnosis.
