The screen flickers or stutters

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Try a different video cable, update the GPU driver, set to a supported Hz and see if the problem is visible on an external monitor.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Another cable and screen

Compare with another monitor and cable to separate the display path from the GPU.

    Steps to follow

    1. Check that the monitor is turned on and that it is possible to open its own menu with the buttons on the body.
    2. In the monitor's Source/Input menu, select the exact jack that the cable is connected to, such as HDMI 1 or DisplayPort.
    3. Turn off the computer and display, reconnect the cable firmly at both ends, bypassing the dock or hub if possible.
    4. Turn it on and check the image. If not, after disconnecting the power, try another suitable cable and, if you have one, another screen.
  2. Hz and driver supported

If only Windows flashes, select a supported frequency and check the graphics driver.

    Steps to follow

    1. Press the Windows logo key and I together on your keyboard to open Settings.
    2. Select "System".
    3. Select "Display".
    4. Select "Advanced display settings".
    5. Select the flickering display and the frequency it supports, such as the standard mode specified by the manufacturer.
    6. If it doesn't help and only Windows flashes, check the graphics driver and its latest update in the Device Manager.
    7. Compare with the same cable and see if the flickering is gone.
  3. Check before Windows starts

If BIOS or the menu of the monitor itself is flashing, diagnostics of the screen, connector or GPU are required.

    Steps to follow

    1. Use the monitor's buttons to open its own menu and see if it blinks as well.
    2. Reboot your computer and watch for the first manufacturer logo before Windows appears. BIOS settings do not need to be changed.
    3. If the flickering is already there, write it down to the technician and compare another cable or screen. If Windows only, start with the graphics driver.

If the problem persists

Check if the flicker is visible in the monitor menu or BIOS. If the image is stable on the external display, test the internal display and cable; if in both, evaluate the graphics subsystem.
