Why is it important to respond immediately?
Even a small amount of liquid can reach the keyboard contacts, connectors, motherboard or battery. After the water evaporates, beverage residue can remain conductive and promote corrosion. Sweet, salty, sour and milky drinks tend to leave behind more contaminants than clean water.
Safe first steps
- Unplug the charger from the power outlet and the computer.
- If the device is still on, turn it off immediately. If it doesn't respond, hold the power button until it turns off.
- Unplug USB devices, dock, headphones, and other connections.
- If the battery is removed externally without tools, remove it. Do not disassemble the case to access the internal lithium battery.
- Gently absorb only the liquid on the surface. Do not shake or use the computer unnecessarily, as the liquid may spread deeper.
- Do not turn on or charge the computer. Refer to diagnostics as soon as possible.
- Tell us what kind of liquid was spilled, when it happened, whether the unit was running at the time, and whether any attempts were made to turn it on after the spill.
Possible signs of damage
- Some of the keys or the touchpad do not work.
- The computer itself presses keys, shuts down or reboots.
- No charging or the power light is flashing.
- An unusual smell is felt, a crackling sound is heard.
- The device works at first, but crashes after a few days.
When is diagnostics necessary?
After internal flushing, diagnostics are recommended even if the computer is still running. Dried fluid does not remove residue and corrosion can progress. It is especially urgent to evaluate the device if it has been turned on, liquid has entered the keyboard or vents, or it was not ordinary water.
Important - what not to do: Do not place the computer in rice, heat it with a hair dryer, on a radiator or in an oven, and do not use compressed air. Do not insert tissues or other objects into the connectors. If the battery is swollen, hisses, smells chemically, heats up rapidly, or smokes, do not touch it or attempt to charge it. Step away from the device; call 112 in case of fire.
Apple also officially warns against drying a wet device with external heat or compressed air or placing it in rice. Apple Security Advisory.

Frequently asked questions
Can you put a spilled computer in rice?
No. Rice does not clean contaminants from electronics, it can leave behind fine particles and only delay a proper inspection.
If the computer works after splashing, is everything ok?
Not necessarily. The fluid can leave conductive or corrosive residues, so the fault sometimes appears later.
How long does it take to dry a computer?
Drying time alone does not indicate whether contaminants and corrosion remain inside. After the liquid gets inside it is safer not to turn it on until diagnostics.
