Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
Make a copy of the document and see if other Word files open. Windows Win+R > winword /safe allows you to test Word without add-ins. A copy of the document can be opened in Word in the Open and Repair window if the option is available. For macOS, do not use this Windows command; try an updated Word or other compatible editor after evaluating the formatting differences.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Word without attachments
On Windows, use winword /safe if a program or its add-on is preventing you from opening.
Steps to follow
- Use Windows Word, not macOS. Save your other work and close Word.
- Press Windows and R, type winword /safe and Enter.
- With Word open, open a copy of the document via File > Open. If it only works here, check the add-on; Safe Mode turns off after normal startup.
Open and Repair
With a copy of the file in Word open, use the repair option if available.
Steps to follow
- Make a copy of the document in the file browser and only edit it.
- In Word, select File > Open > Browse, find a copy; don't just open it from the Recent list.
- Next to the Open button, select its arrow > Open and Repair if your version has it.
- Save the result with a new name and review the text and formatting before overwriting the original.
Another compatible editor
If the file is important, try a trusted editor after considering possible formatting differences and privacy.
Steps to follow
- Make a copy of the document on your device.
- In an installed trusted editor that supports that format, choose File > Open and copy.
- If it opens, save it under a different name and see if the tables, fonts and pages have changed. Do not upload a confidential file to a third-party service.
If the problem persists
Windows command winword /safe check Word without attachments; this is not a macOS command. Try Open and Repair with a copy of the document; don't upload confidential file to obscure "repair" sites.
