Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
Check that the formula receives the expected data type; numbers are sometimes stored as text or separated by tabs.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Processing of input data
Check that the formula receives numbers instead of text and remove unnecessary spaces.
Steps to follow
- Select the cell used in the formula and check that it is indeed a number and not text with a space or unit word.
- Try a small copy: enter a real number and compare the result. Do not blindly rewrite the original table.
- Check the decimal tab with your Excel language and data form; only then handle the affected cells.
Checking the parts of the formula
Check part by part and compare tabs; IFERROR must not replace correcting the real cause.
Steps to follow
- Make a copy of the table and mark the wrong formula in it.
- Check its links and the result of each part; if the version has Formula > Evaluate Formula, use preview.
- If you find text instead of a number or an invalid link, correct it and check the result. Use IFERROR only to understand the cause, not to hide the error.
If the problem persists
Test the parts of the formula separately, check text spacing and number formatting. IFERROR can hide an error but does not correct invalid input data; first find the reason.
