Windows displays a "Preparing Automatic Repair" loop

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Disconnect the unrelated USB media and check if BIOS detects the system drive stably. In the Windows recovery environment, you can start with Startup Repair and, if there is a suitable point, System Restore. If the drive disappears or shows read errors, do not repeat the repair loop. Before proceeding with the boot, make a copy of the files and the encryption key.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Startup Repair

If the drive is detected stably, try a startup repair first in the recovery environment.

    Steps to follow

    1. Have a copy of important files and BitLocker key. If the drive disappears or makes noises, do not start this repair.
    2. In the available login window, Shift+Restart will open recovery; otherwise, choose "Repair your computer" instead of install from the prepared Windows USB.
    3. Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair and select the system you need.
    4. Wait for completion and test the launch. If the repair fails, write a message; do not delete partitions.
  2. Reverting to the previous system state

If there is a valid restore point or problem after the update, consider doing System Restore or removing it with a copy.

    Steps to follow

    1. First, save the files and prepare the BitLocker key. Open Windows Recovery Environment via Shift+Restart or Recovery USB > Repair PC.
    2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
    3. If there is a point before the crash, review the date and affected apps before confirming. If there is no dot, skip this method.
    4. Wait for completion and check if Windows starts. It is not a substitute for backing up your documents.
  3. Data recovery from an unstable disk

If the drive disappears or shows read errors, do not repeat the repair loop; save files and apply.

    Steps to follow

    1. Save important files if your computer or drive is stable. If it makes unusual noises, smells like burning or the battery is swollen, stop testing.
    2. Write down the exact pattern of when the problem started and what action it took to reoccur. Take a picture of the visible error or deformation without opening the case.
    3. Submit a repair request with this information.

If the problem persists

If the drive is detected and the data is safe, try removing the last quality update or existing restore point. If the disk disappears, do not repeat the repair loop - the priority is data recovery.
