How can reducing Windows animations make an older PC feel faster?

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Reducing animations can make windows and menus feel more responsive on a modest PC. It does not increase CPU power and may not change application loading times. Choose a comfortable appearance and compare the same action.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Turn off animation and transparency effects

Start with accessibility settings that are easy to restore.

    Steps to follow

    1. In Windows 11, open Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects.
    2. Turn off Animation effects, then open Start and switch between windows several times.
    3. To reduce additional effects, turn off Transparency effects and check that the appearance remains comfortable.
    4. In Windows 10, look under Settings > Ease of Access > Display; if the options are absent, use Settings search.
  2. Choose only the visual effects you need

You can preserve readable text while reducing other effects.

    Steps to follow

    1. Press Win + R, type SystemPropertiesPerformance.exe and press Enter.
    2. In Visual Effects, note the current selection. Select Adjust for best performance and click Apply.
    3. If text becomes uncomfortable to read, select Custom and enable Smooth edges of screen fonts. Restore other effects as needed.
    4. Compare window responsiveness; if you notice no benefit, restore the previous selection.

If the problem persists

If one application computes slowly or the whole PC freezes, changing effects alone will not solve it. Check resource usage and the system drive's condition.
