How can replacing an HDD with an SSD speed up an old PC?

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

If Windows and applications take a long time to load, first identify the drive containing Windows. An SSD is particularly useful when the system still runs from a mechanical HDD. Connecting an additional SSD does not move Windows off the old drive.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Check the drive and compatibility

The drive shape and connection must match the exact computer model.

    Steps to follow

    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Performance > Disk and note the model and HDD or SSD type shown for the C: drive.
    2. Copy the exact computer model from its label. Check the manufacturer's manual for supported drives: 2.5-inch SATA, M.2 SATA or M.2 NVMe.
    3. Open This PC and check the space used on C:. The replacement must hold the data you intend to transfer and leave room for ongoing use.
    4. If the specification is unclear, give a technician the computer model and drive details before buying. An M.2 label alone does not establish compatibility.
  2. Prepare a safe system migration

Back up your files before moving the system.

    Steps to follow

    1. Copy important documents to another physical drive and open several copied files to check the backup.
    2. If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, save the recovery key. List the applications and account details you will need.
    3. Choose system cloning with a compatible manufacturer tool or a clean Windows installation. If you do not know how to disconnect the battery and replace the drive, have a technician do it.
    4. After migration, confirm Windows starts from the SSD and your documents open. Do not erase the old drive until the system and a separate backup have been checked.

If the problem persists

If the PC already has an SSD, check memory pressure, workload and cooling before buying another. If an HDD clicks or disappears, prioritize data recovery instead of repeatedly attempting cloning.
