Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshooting; sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the license. License transfer depends on the type.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Activation troubleshooting
After logging in to the account associated with the license, select activation diagnostics after hardware replacement.
Steps to follow
- Press the Windows logo key and I together on your keyboard to open Settings.
- Select "System".
- Select "Activation".
- If an error is displayed, select "Troubleshoot".
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used for the license. After replacing the board, select You have recently replaced the hardware of this device, if offered.
- Complete the wizard and check the status. If the selection is not available or fails, save the code and license documents.
License type check
If activation does not return, check the Retail/OEM terms and conditions and purchase documents with the vendor or Microsoft.
Steps to follow
- Open your Windows license purchase document or computer order information.
- Check whether the license is for Home or Pro, and whether it is OEM or Retail transferable - ask your dealer if you are not sure.
- Please provide the activation error code and document information to the vendor or Microsoft privately. Do not share your product key publicly.
If the problem persists
Check whether this is a Retail transfer or an OEM license associated with the device and save the purchase documents. If troubleshooting does not help, contact Microsoft or your vendor for legal migration.
