The same NAS is accessible by IP but not by name

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

If NAS sharing works by IP but not by name, there is likely a naming or DNS problem. This is different from SMB not working at all. Choose a permanent solution based on your home or organization's network structure.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Address and name comparison

Confirm that both paths lead to the same NAS.

    Steps to follow

    1. Check your router's client list or NAS screen for its current local IP address.
    2. In the file explorer, compare the path by IP and the same share by NAS name.
    3. If it works by IP, write down the exact name error and check if the NAS name has been changed recently.
    4. At the command line, the nslookup command with the NAS DNS name can show what address it resolves to; Simple local discovery names do not always use DNS.
  2. Local name and address management

Fix the source instead of making random posts.

    Steps to follow

    1. Check that the PC and NAS are connected to the same valid local network, not an isolated guest network.
    2. On the router, according to its instruction, assign a DHCP reservation to the NAS so that the IP does not change arbitrarily.
    3. If local DNS is used, correct the NAS name entry in the administration site according to the reserved address.
    4. After updating, check the name again. Do not use a manual host file entry unless you anticipate a future address change.

If the problem persists

If this is a work domain environment, coordinate the DNS settings with the administrator. Accidentally writing public DNS can degrade the performance of internal names. Do not solve the NAS name problem by disabling the firewall permanently.
