Windows – common problems and fixes

The screen does not turn on after sleep mode

Topic #109 · Updated · Pataisoma.lt

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Try to wake with a key or a short press of the power button and Win+Ctrl+Shift+B in Windows. Disconnect an external monitor or dock and compare performance. If it happens again, install the appropriate graphics and chipset drivers for your model. Updating BIOS is not the first step: it must comply with the manufacturer's recommendation, stable power supply and readiness to restore BitLocker.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Screen wake up

Try a short press of the power button and Win+Ctrl+Shift+B in a running Windows.

    Steps to follow

    1. If the computer appears to be on, press Windows, Ctrl, Shift, and B at the same time. The screen may flicker.
    2. Press Windows and P; if the menu is visible, select the appropriate screen. Don't blindly change a lot of settings.
    3. Check its Input and cable on the external display. If the screen doesn't work since power on, Windows key combinations won't fix it.
  2. Disconnecting the dock or external monitor

If wake-up only works with the add-on, try without it and check its compatibility.

    Steps to follow

    1. Save your work and shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the dock or external display, leave the model with adequate power.
    3. After powering on, compare sleep and wake up with internal display.
    4. If it helped, the problem is with the attachment path; check the model of the dock and its drivers, not a complete reinstallation of Windows.
  3. Driver and mode change

Check graphics and chip drivers; can temporarily use sedation in lieu of sleep if supported.

    Steps to follow

    1. Make a note of the pattern, when the shutdown or wakeup fails, and if the dock is connected.
    2. Check the graphics and chipset/power drivers for your model on the manufacturer's official website and follow the wizard to install them.
    3. Reload and compare without external plugins. In Windows Power Options, temporarily select Sustained Sleep instead of Sleep if needed.
    4. Leave the BIOS update only to the procedure provided by the manufacturer with a copy, key and stable power; if you don't know, ask the master.

If the problem persists

Check if the computer wakes up after disconnecting the dock or external monitor. Consider updating BIOS only with stable power and recovery key; until the cause is resolved, sedation can be used in lieu of sleep.
