Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
Check that Shutdown is selected instead of Sleep and that an update is not in progress. Close the programs after saving your work. If the problem persists, temporarily disable Fast Startup in Power Options in Control Panel, if the option is available. If only the charging indicator remains, this may be normal; a forced shutdown can cause job loss and stop writing to disk.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Completing a normal shutdown
Save your work, close the applications and wait if an update is in progress.
Steps to follow
- Save changes to all open documents.
- In the Start menu, select the power button and the normal "Shut down"; file lock can be "Restarted".
- If an update is in progress, do not interrupt it. Wait for the system to complete the operation.
- Disconnect the USB drive only when the computer is turned off; after reboot check if the file is no longer locked. Don't use Force Shutdown as the first step.
Fast Startup test
If it happens again, temporarily disable Fast Startup in power options if your system has it.
Steps to follow
- In the Start search, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- On the left, select Power button actions setting and "Change currently unavailable settings" if needed.
- Uncheck "Enable fast startup" if that option is there and save.
- Shut down the computer normally and compare. If it didn't help, you can return the option; a forced shutdown is not a substitute for verification.
Energy management diagnostics
If the shutdown still does not complete, check the model drivers and the latest related change.
Steps to follow
- Make a note of the pattern, when the shutdown or wakeup fails, and if the dock is connected.
- Check the graphics and chipset/power drivers for your model on the manufacturer's official website and follow the wizard to install them.
- Reload and compare without external plugins. In Windows Power Options, temporarily select Sustained Sleep instead of Sleep if needed.
- Leave the BIOS update only to the procedure provided by the manufacturer with a copy, key and stable power; if you don't know, ask the master.
If the problem persists
Distinguish incomplete shutdown from sleep mode. If only the charging indicator remains, this is not necessarily a malfunction; if the fans are spinning, check the power managers and the last system change.
